Join our team!!! The Ouachita Parish Public Library is located in the beautiful twin cities of Monroe/West Monroe in northeast Louisiana. The library system consists of 6 branches plus a bookmobile, with a 7th branch in the planning stages. Ouachita Parish Public Library serves a population of 146,985 and is proud to be one of the top libraries in the state.

The library offers liberal benefits, including an excellent retirement system, vacations, sick leave and health insurance. Employees may advance to higher positions according to their abilities, qualifications, education, and special interests based upon the needs of the library. After offered employment at the Ouachita Parish Public Library, the applicant agrees to be tested and to successfully pass a drug screening in order to be added to the payroll. The screening will be done by an independent laboratory with the cost to be covered by the library. Ouachita Parish Public Library is an equal opportunity employer.

Library Assistant I – Building & Grounds Aide
40 hours per week – Beginning hourly rate $9.0390

Answers to:  Operations Coordinator


Nature of Work:
Under general supervision, responsible for maintaining clean and neat facilities, prepares   
          designated areas for programs and activities as directed and may perform minor
           maintenance functions.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
            Disposal of exterior waste and debris at all branch facilities
            Fill vending machines
            Set-up tables and chairs for specific programs
            Assist in grounds maintenance at all branches
            Keep all departments supplied with copier paper.
            Assist with loading and unloading of freight as needed
            Assist with transport of materials between branches as needed
            Assist with keeping supply closets stocked
            Assist with moving of furniture as needed
            Perform janitorial duties when needed in absence of regular janitor.
            Make trips to courthouse for Business Office
            Dispose of old newspapers
            Other duties as assigned

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
            Must be able to function as a team with other maintenance and building staff under supervision of Operations Coordinator
            Must have a valid driver's license or obtain license within 30 days of employment
(a driving record check will be performed on all employees driving Library vehicles)
Must be able to follow written and oral instructions
            Needs enough initiative to see things that need to be done without being told

            Basic knowledge of using basic tools for doing small repair/maintenance tasks

Physical Requirements:
            Work is performed both indoors and outdoors and exposure is to a variety of
            weather conditions and temperatures.
            Work requires considerable and strenuous standing, stooping, climbing, walking and
            lifting objects in excess of 74 lbs.
            Work areas are sometimes difficult or dangerous access

Required Qualifications:
            High school diploma or GED

Library Assistant I - Circulation - Anna Meyer Branch                                       Part-time, 25 hours per week
Beginning hourly rate: $9.0390 per hour

ANSWERS TO: BRANCH MANAGER

NATURE OF WORK: Frontline Customer Service Representative for the Library

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assist with Page duties when needed
Checking in/out materials
Patron Registrations
Collecting fines/fees
Place hold on materials for patrons
Answer phones
Identify and send in materials for cleaning and repair
Assist patrons with basic reference and informational queries

Obtain basic working knowledge of all aspects of the Branch and assist co-workers as needed.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
Ability to deal effectively with co-workers and the public
Basic computer skills including working in a windows environment
Function as a Team-Player with co-workers and assist in all areas of the Branch as needed
Operation of debit/charge machines

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Work is performed in office environment and requires sitting, standing, stooping, walking and lifting of objects weighing less than 25 lbs; may require lifting objects weighing in excess of 25 lbs occasionally. Common abilities such as mobility and dexterity.

REQUIRED EDUCATION:

High School diploma or equivalent.

Library Assistant I - Floater

Answers to: Operations Coordinator
Branch Manager or Designated Department Head

Nature of Work:
        Under general supervision, serves as System substitute.  Responsible for providing              Customer Service in all branches of the Ouachita Parish Public Library.
           
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
            Checking in/out materials
            Registering patrons
            Collecting fines and other library related charges
            Place holds on materials for patrons
            Answer telephones
            Identify and send in materials for cleaning and repair
            Assist patrons in basic reference and other areas of the library
            General duties of any department where a substitute may be needed on a short term basis
           
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
            Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
            Ability to deal effectively with co-workers and the public
            Work effectively in automated system used for library circulation
           

Physical Requirements:
            Work is performed in office environment and requires sitting, standing, stooping,
            walking and lifting of objects weighing less than 25 lbs.; may require lifting
            objects in excess of 25 lbs. occasionally.
            Common abilities such as mobility and dexterity

Page – Circulation – Main Branch
Part-time, 20 hours per week
Beginning hourly rate:  $7.8131

Answers to: Head Circulation /Branch Head


Nature of work:  Responsible for the shelving and retrieving of books and other materials.  No requirement of any special knowledge or library procedures.


Duties & Responsibilities:

Sort and shelves books according to Dewey Decimal System
Check shelves for correct arrangement of books
Empty book drop
Clear tables of books and magazines
Place new periodical in display and file and store old periodicals
Retrieve books and periodical from shelves
Process new patron application
Clean and inspect AV material (DVDs, CDs, etc.)
Assist with opening or closing of building

Required Knowledge:

Sort and file alphabetically and numerically
Ability to follow simple oral & written instruction
Ability to perform light physical tasks
Positive attitude toward public service
Self motivated

Physical requirements:

Work requires some physical exertion such as long periods of standing, recurring stooping, climbing, or walking.  Recurring lifting of moderately heavy items weighing less than 25 lbs and may require occasional lifting of objects weighing more than 25lbs.  Common abilities such as mobility and dexterity.

Required Qualifications:

Sixteen years of age and completion of tenth grade of high school

Full-time, 40 hours per week, $12.2917 per hour

Answers to: Branch Manager

Nature of Work:
                Under general supervision, provides service and instructions to library patrons
regarding the use of reference and other materials.
Plans and conducts programs for teens and young adults.       
Does not supervise other staff.
               
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
                Maintain reference area
                Answer routine reference questions
                Assist and train patrons in locating information and using resource materials &
equipment
                Assist patrons in use of internet and computer hardware and software including e-readers, place materials on hold, plan and present programs for teens and young adults, other duties as requested

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
                Good knowledge of standard library practices and procedures
                Skill in the use of computers and other office equipment
                Ability to deal effectively with patrons and co-workers
                Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
Function as team-player and assist in all areas of the branch as needed

Physical Requirements:
                Work is performed in an office environment and requires sitting, standing, stooping, walking and lifting of objects weighing less than 25 lbs.; may require lifting of objects in excess of 25 lbs. occasionally.Common abilities such as mobility and dexterity.

Required Qualifications:
            BS/BA + 1 year library or related experience + 9 hrs in Library Science OR 
2 years college (60 hrs) + minimum of 5 years of library or related
experience + 9 hours in Library Science  OR
High school diploma + 7-10 years of library or related experience + 9 hrs in Library Science

NOTE:   Successful completion of 3 Core Competencies of the ALA/APA LSSC Program may be substituted for 9 hours in Library Science
